Big Band at Dizzy's
Clubs are where jazz was born
and raised, and where it will live on
forever. Our big bands rehearse
each afternoon to prepare for an
experience of a lifetime, performing
on stage at acclaimed Dizzy's
Jazz Club Coca Cola at Lincoln
Center. The night is hosted by our
artistic director, Christian McBride.
ASCAP Composition Track
For those ready to dig into the
craft of composition, we offer an
advanced custom track that
focuses on the technical skills and
process of composition. From
musical ideas to sketches to
revisions to performance, students
get an insiders view of the "tools"
needed and the many avenues
open to today's composers.
Big Band Overnight
Woodshedding, mentorship,
camaraderie and "the hang" are
the main focus of our overnight
session. Musicians will participate
in extended rehearsals and
masterclasses in preparation for
the upcoming night at Dizzy's.
This overnight will solidify musical
friendships that will last a lifetime.
Montclair Jazz Festival
Now in its 3rd year, last year's
FREE jazz festival produced by
Jazz House Kids, boasted over
1000 attendees and featured more
than 125 artists (professionals and
students) on stage. Under the
direction of multi-Grammy winner
and internationally celebrated
bassist Christian McBride, the
festival features a star-studded
line-up. Last year's headliners
included jazz legends Monty
Alexander and Billy Hart alongside
our top faculty and tomorrow's
rising stars...our students!
Louis Armstrong Track
New to jazz? Still learning your
instrument? No problem. Our
Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong track
is designed for younger less
experienced musicians that want
to get started down the jazz road
and playing with other musicians.
Armstrong sessions are specifically
designed to help musicians
gain the technical fundamentals
on their instruments while also
giving them introductions to
improvisation, listening, theory
and the thrill of live performance.
Faculty & Guest Artists
In addition to our incredible core
faculty that teach every day,
special guests join us each week
to conduct masterclasses and
work with ensembles throughout
the day. Past guests include: Billy
Hart, Steve Turre, Steve Wilson,
Christian Sands, James Burton
and tap dancer Maurice Chestnut.
Combos at Trumpets
The "small group" is at the heart of
jazz. They give the space and
freedom for musicians to improvise
and create at the highest
level. Our small ensembles
rehearse each day and are
featured on-stage at Trumpets
Jazz Club in Montclair, NJ.
